Peterborough Bicycle Advisory Committee

PBAC quietly (and sometimes, not so quietly) works on behalf of cyclists in both Peterborough City and Peterborough County.  For almost a generation PBAC has been working behind the scenes to educate and advise decision-makers in Peterborough.  With a balanced eye toward the interaction between people on bikes, people in cars and people walking, PBAC is always focused on safety and connectivity. This tireless and thankless work has slowly transformed our city.  In 2022, with PBAC’s consultation, the City of Peterborough finalized its Cycling Master Plan, which is now an official part of the Transportation Master Plan for the city.

So many of us here at Wild Rock ride every day.  We are deeply thankful for all that PBAC has done and continues to do for the community.

Questions For PBAC

Susan Sauve, Chair

Briefly describe what the Peterborough Bicycle Advisory Committee does here in Peterborough.

The Peterborough Bicycle Advisory Committee works to improve the culture of cycling in the City and County of Peterborough. This includes supporting growth in the number of people that ride bicycles and improving the quality of the experience of riding a bicycle.

How many Km of cycling infrastructure have been built in Peterborough in the last 10 years?

While we do not have the exact kilometres of cycling infrastructure built in the last 10 years, our estimate is about 25 kilometres. There are several roads with new paved shoulders in the County of Peterborough and several projects in the City of Peterborough including:

  • Roper Park Trail

  • Bethune Street

  • Crawford Trail

  • Charlotte Street cycling lanes

  • George Street cycling lanes

  • Water Street downtown

  • McDonnel Street cycling lanes

What PBAC achievement are you most proud of?

PBAC is proud to have worked with the City of Peterborough on the recently approved Cycling Master Plan. We are pleased with the progress made over the last 10 years to improve cycling, but we are equally as excited to see what unfolds over the next 10 years.

If PBAC could have its vision fulfilled how would cycling infrastructure in Peterborough look?

Big question! There would be contiguous, efficient connections north-south and east-west that are enjoyable and efficient to ride in the City. In the County, there would be cycling facilities connecting the villages and along core recreational routes.

Are there currently volunteer positions open at PBAC?

PBAC is currently a volunteer-based organization with 11 Board members and a few volunteers with specific roles such as social media and website development. We do not have volunteer positions per se, but if someone saw a need and wanted to contribute in some way, they would be welcome!

What do you wish more people knew about the work that PBAC does?

The work that we do is broader than cycling. Because cyclists are vulnerable road users, we are especially aware of the community benefits of safer streets, and we also advocate for advanced road safety design and complete streets.

How can Wild Rock customers get involved?
